Katie Cridge’s series Distillation is a reflection of an experience being both cool and warm at once. Mainly restricting her palette to cool shades along side warm reds and pinks, she uses sharp and flowing forms to give a sense of the comfort found in concrete desolation. In this series, Katie has engaged in a more in-depth study of contrasting elements complimenting or reinforcing each other.
Her large-scale work Concrete Fluidity, intentional in its absence of visible affirmation, is based on the formation of shapes and the impression light has in memory when passing through the city without consciously taking note of the surroundings. The bold and clearly defined shapes of deep blue, blue-black, rust and grey almost intermingled, is juxtaposed with the delicacy of application.
Says Katie: “At dusk the buildings are all the more nondescript in appearance. What’s more interesting is what the light chooses to define and how our attention cannot break from it.”
