Says Nunzio Miano of his work: “Farmer with the Expensive Coat is part of The Sicilians series, where I am reflecting on what I perceived was my primitive childhood yet only recently came to appreciate the rich and colourful culture. This particular piece explores pride and poverty, self preservation and sense of worth. The naïve composition uses bright colours contrasted with the black brush work.”
As the son of Sicilian immigrants, living a dual existence in middle class Australian suburbia became the norm. Nunzio takes a deep dive into his personal journey, reflecting on his rich cultural heritage and upbringing. His work explores the idea of identity, but in particular, the facade that we use in society to mask their inner sensitivities and insecurities.
