Diptaa Sloniir’s Have You Seen Me series starts with a missing person.
“When I lived in the USA, I would receive random ads in my mailbox,” explains Diptaa. “They often included a ‘Have you seen me?’ heading with a mugshot of a missing person – people of all ages and missing dates. I wondered about whose faces I unwittingly got to look at, and was confused about what it meant for anybody to receive these strange photographs. Who were they, why now, why me? And what a strange tool to reconnect missing persons to the world of living. I started collecting these portraits, always in very poor resolution. I was especially curious about the photographs that had been age-processed, images that added another level of weirdness to this already surreal encounter.”
From there, Have You Seen Me began, with Diptaa keeping these people in her mind. She was challenged by the space and time to which these missing persons belonged, and she insists that the series is not about personal tragedies nor loss, but more about what it means to be missing and the disconnection of these people from our world in ways other than death. “I wanted to work on the concept of distancing, using screens and transparencies to illustrate the missing persons’ disrupted identification and, for most people, the slow abstraction of their presence,” she says.
