Says Maria Kostareva of her painting Midday Market, Break: “Here I’ve depicted a scene I saw in the Istanbul street market. But this universal image could be caught anywhere. It was the middle of a rather hot day. I think the merchant has gone to rest. But this place still keeps a trace of his presence.”

Maria says of her series of urban moments: “It seems to me that when everyday spaces within a city become so utilitarian and impersonal, a place for the person themselves is paradoxically liberated. When you do not need to think about how to cross the street safely, you can devote those minutes to anything you like. If you switch off the automatic mode of repetitive actions, you can start to pay attention to visual images around you.
