Says Michelle of Modern House: “All my work is about architecture, and modernist shapes and details appeal to me for their streamlining. Those spaces are often subject to disruption by a playful or illogical event, such as the floral drops of liquid. Multiple perspectives and scale relationships exist simultaneously in my work. I trace the evolution of that back to my childhood, when I absorbed paintings by Matisse and Persian and Indian miniatures, both of which use flattened and stacked spaces.”
Michelle continues, “The dusty pink and dark grey striping that occurs in Lace and in Modern House derives from my interest in dazzle camouflage patterns, applied to military ships in WWI. Like the marbleising, the dazzle camo imagery is another specialised type of pattern that I’ve researched extensively.”
