Says Isabelle de Kleine of This Has All Been for Something; “It is about coming to terms with an uncomfortable reality and finding beauty in uncertainty. The artwork explores the impact of memory, emotion and experience in formation of identity. These elements are flawed, fallible and in-concrete. Over time, memories shift and fade, stories change and details are forgotten.
The inspiration for the painting, is rooted in Isabelle de Kleine’s personal experiences and narrative. Her interest with the human psyche stems from her grandmother’s struggle with Alzheimer’s. The long exposure to the destructive nature of the disease and the slow degradation of her grandmother’s mental state was instrumental in de Kleine’s artistic progression and a primary inspiration behind the artwork.
“This Has All Been for Something is polarising in nature,” says Isabelle. “Painterly and expressive marks contained within shapes and lines represent the fluctuation between individual autonomy and the uncontrollable nature of the mind. The painting uses an over saturation of colours, shapes and mark making to express the feeling of controlled chaos, as well as using collage stylisation to represent the multifaceted nature of identity. The work does not seek to stigmatise cognitive disorders but attempts to find beauty and solace within the senselessness.
