Says Antonia Mrljak of her latest series Blank Canvas: “I wanted to look at the artist’s studio as a suburb, so to consider the psychological and geographical elements of a microenvironment and its dimensions. Stillness comes and goes, diverse energies charge the space and begin to map out territories of action and reason, both of logic and the viscera.

“My experience with this came as I relocated into the ‘suburb’ of my own studio; the way shared space can engender an insurgence of creativity and unexpected consilience in practice is an expression of positive spatial identity. The paintings are about a moment of time spent getting to know myself in a new space, the mark making and layering expand discourse and instil the familiarity of my new environment.”
