Morgan Stokes’ ‘Simulation Sculpture 10’ from the series Skin, is both introspective and reflective, Stokes’ post-minimal sensibility and meditative process evident with the gentle working of each surface. This latest series of work recalls the origins of art, the nature of creation, and the role of material in an increasingly material-free culture.

Morgan says of this work, “In my simulation sculpture series I reflect on the fundamentals of traditional sculpture as a medium; that is, through exploring stone and metal. I was inspired by the ultra-polished language of 3D digital art to create an otherworldly component to merge the rocks. The blob has been made to appear as something otherworldly, maybe futuristic or even digital, however the rock’s primordial history speaks in opposition to this. The title refers to the relationship between rock and metal, the reflection created by the blob, and the ultimate digital sublimation of the piece.”

A work of sculpture brings an extra dimension to a room. It’s a moment of artistic expression and originality that can be appreciated in the round, elevating the experience of moving through a space. From classical torsos and busts raised on plinths for added gravitas to intriguing abstractions and totemic floor works, a sculptural piece is a point of thoughtful pause that can be provocative, alluring, diverting or captivatingly beautiful.

Today is the first day of Reconciliation Week, but Today is the first day of Reconciliation Week, but every day we need to do more, do better, listen more and act with intention and understanding. Our gallery stands on the lands of the Gadigal people of the Eora nation. We celebrate the gift of their culture - the oldest living culture on earth.

Reconciliation Australia’s theme for 2023, “Be a voice for generations” calls on all Australians to act today to tackle the unfinished business of reconciliation.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
To be a voice for reconciliation means amplifying the calls of past generations of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples that have fought hard and paved the way.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
And it means using your power, your words and your vote to create a better, more just Australia for all of us.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
For the work of generations past and the fate of generations future, let’s ALL— individuals, families, communities, organisations and government—choose to create a more reconciled country.
-------------------------------
National Reconciliation Week – 27 May to 3 June every year– is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.
 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
National Reconciliation Week is bookended by two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey— the successful 1967 referendum, and the High Court Mabo decision, respectively.

Join us for drinks tonight 5-8pm to celebrate the Join us for drinks tonight 5-8pm to celebrate the opening of MORGAN STOKES - SKIN.

Morgan’s ‘Skin & Dust Painting’ from the series Skin, is made from oil painting primer, rabbit skin glue, together with marble dust on linen. Morgan says of this work, “I was interested in how I could reinterpret these age-old materials into a painting without using any paint. Looking to rock art from Eora land where I live and ancient rock art found abroad, I am interested in creation as something primal, something human.”

Morgan says of this series, “In my work I explore and reinterpret the medium of painting, and more recently, sculpture. From a conceptual approach, I aim to dissect painting into its discrete elements, such as linen, paint or stretcher bars, to enquire into what makes a painting in the digital age. By creating formal studies into material, I explore what I call the ‘virtual gaze’, that is, how our mode of perception is shifting as our lives are increasingly mediated by the screen. In my show ‘Skin’, I interpret painting as a metaphor for personhood and subsequently surface as a metaphor for skin.”

For his latest exhibition, Skin, Morgan Stokes interprets painting as a metaphor for personhood and subsequently surface as a metaphor for skin. Skin is a primal response to material; rabbit skin glue, rock dust and raw linen sit beside worked fabric and metal, a conversation between matter both pre-historic and futuristic. The works are introspective and reflective, Morgan’s post-minimal sensibility and meditative process evident with the gentle working of each surface. Skin recalls the origins of art, the nature of creation, and the role of material in an increasingly material-free culture.

Dining room details 🤍

I love how art can set the mood in a room. This beautiful art by @theresahuntartist @curatorialandco from creates a feeling of calm. The deep blues add depth to balance all the light tones in the space.

Art is my secret weapon when it comes to styling. I couldn’t do my job without it and how lucky I am to work with so many talented artists and generous galleries that make my job so enjoyable.
