Gemma Avery is a photographic collage artist from Sydney.
Says Gemma of her work: “I started using collage several years ago as a way of paring back, or simplifying, a painting practice that had become convoluted. The process of collage enables me to transform existing images and explore alternative points of view. Often, the final point of view only becomes apparent when the process reveals it to me.”
Gemma holds a Bachelor of Fine Art Hons (1st Class) in painting, and a Masters of Fine Arts in printmaking from National Art School, Sydney. She has been the recipient of numerous awards and residencies including the Mark Henry Cain Memorial Scholarship, 2015, the Goldberg Prize for Excellence in Photography and Print Media, 2017 and the Onslow Storrier NAS Studio Residency Cité Internationale des Art, Paris, 2018.
