Says Susie of this work: “This artwork, Aperture, is part of a series that I am working on where the canvas is sewn (a nod to the history of women’s work) to block out areas while I paint. Painting on a pleated canvas is not easy and highlights the challenges that women still have to make work and fair income. When the canvas is unpicked and stretched the resulting picture is distorted and fractured. Parts of the canvas are unpainted – approximately 25% representing the gaps in pay.
I have named the painting ‘Aperture’. It is a comment on the light that is now shining on this issue. The work is full of hope for change and a tribute to the indomitable spirit of all women and non-binary artists who have fought for pay parity.”
