Says Amy Wright of her painting Bel and Mick’s Flowering Gum: “I often work from memory. It can be a fleeting image that I hold in my head. More often than not it is an emotional response that the sight provoked in me that I remember more vividly than the actual subject. It’s this ‘feeling’ that I attempt to replicate through the painting.
“This particular subject is my neighbours’ Flowering Gum Tree. Standing in the road, at dusk, waving off a friend, I happened to glance in its direction. It was a formidable blue shadow against an eerie yellowed sky, bathed in a pinky purple hue. It was both at once, warm and foreboding.”
