Says Ben of this work: “I love the work of Richard Diebenkorn and I was very interested to read about the women in his life that were of such great support to him during his career. His wife Phyllis and key collectors were a source of inspiration and constructive criticism all through his time as an artist. It reminded me of the strong women in my own life who play such an integral role in my painting practice. So this painting is for them and about them.”

Ben Crawford is a figurative painter. He mostly paints about his life, exploring the story telling possibilities of distorted memories and dreams. Surreal elements transform the landscapes he paints into somewhat mystical realms, bursting with colour and charged with mystery. Figures, architecture and landmarks drawn from his life imbue Ben’s paintings with a sense of narrative, anchoring his work tentatively to reality.
