Says Ben of this work: “When the attacks on the World Trade Centre happened in New York, my father and I were tending to a bonfire in the garden. My dad went inside to start making lunch and a couple of minutes later he came out again and told me I needed to come in and see what was happening on the news. It’s one of those days I’ll never forget and it has an almost magically surreal feeling about it which I wanted to try and capture in a painting.”

Ben Crawford is a figurative painter. He mostly paints about his life, exploring the story telling possibilities of distorted memories and dreams. Surreal elements transform the landscapes he paints into somewhat mystical realms, bursting with colour and charged with mystery. Figures, architecture and landmarks drawn from his life imbue Ben’s paintings with a sense of narrative, anchoring his work tentatively to reality.
