This body of work references Amanda’s representational en plein air sketches, experiences and a visceral interconnectedness of time spent immersed at Wilson’s Promontory, Victoria. Returning to the studio Amanda surrenders to the mark, oscillating between an abstract emotive response and recall. A blurred line, with an extended visual vocabulary, taken from cues found in the visible landscape. It is through this culmination of all things that a true representation of her experience is formed.
Amanda Schunker is an eclectic cultural mix of Chinese/Anglo/Indian heritage. Over the years she has quietly worked away to make a claim on her identity, always taking refuge in nature, wherever that may be in the world. It is through this process of deconstruction of the familiar and cultural conditioning that she has developed her own dialogue of abstract responses to her natural environment.
