This work is from Daniel O’Toole’s solo exhibition Deliquescent Light. This exhibition explores Daniel’s experiences with Synesthesia as he works with colour, light and sound through a multitude of mediums.
Says Dan of this series: “I blur the line between disciplines, always looking for an outcome which unites the various aspects of my practice in a cohesive way,” he says. “Kinetic distortion, the movement of shadows, the way that sunlight and water react in different vessels, modulation of light waves or soundwaves – these nuanced micro-events that can be easily missed in everyday life form the focus of my time-based works. I use painting to suspend these moments of beauty.”
Daniel O’Toole works across a variety of media including painting, video, sound and installation. Previously a prolific street artist, O’Toole has moved to focus on this new series of video works and paintings that draw heavily on music, visualising the experience of listening. The sonic addition has been designed to complement the works, drawing the audience’s attention to the passage of time and slowing down the experience of how light behaves, noticing the refraction events taking place and how the colour hues shift while navigating the space within O’Toole’s paintings.
