Says Maria Kostareva of her painting Scream: “Bergman made a lasting impression on me. His film Cries and Whispers in particular. To me, his works are visually perfect. Each of his films is more than just a private story, they are parables. In this work, I wanted to depict a ‘cry’, one of the strongest human signals of emotion. A cry can signal pain or pleasure, birth or death.”

Maria says of her series of urban moments: “It seems to me that when everyday spaces within a city become so utilitarian and impersonal, a place for the person themselves is paradoxically liberated. When you do not need to think about how to cross the street safely, you can devote those minutes to anything you like. If you switch off the automatic mode of repetitive actions, you can start to pay attention to visual images around you.
