Antonia Mrljak’s latest series Nature of Memory sees her spontaneously drive through the rural landscape and, on the way, collect the nuances of the countryside that pass her by – reflections of colours and shapes and textures that later reoccur in her memory when she goes to paint. Tells Antonia: “On this occasion, I decided to go head to Orange in NSW. When I went through Orange what I noticed was the lush and the dry. The light was extremely bright and high key, a reflection on every surface seemed to dull everything down but at the same time heighten other aspects of the landscape – shapes and silhouettes, in particular.

“Because I’m constantly thinking about painting and colours and the shapes that I see in the landscape, I’m continually observing. In fact, it’s all consuming. It’s not just about looking but about taking visual notes, and that’s what I do every day, constantly.

“I could be having a conversation or driving or just sitting, and my mind is in two places – one is in conversation and the other is in observation, and that’s how I come to the actual painting. I go back to the canvas and have the conversation in my head about the time and the place where I was, and then those memories and nuances and colours all come back, and the work progresses in layers and layers.”

There are two parts to her The Making Life series, explains Antonia: “The canvas works reflect the afternoons that we had just resting and observing during a quiet period, and the paper works are more about driving through the landscape and the rush of it – the flash of the colours and the light that were rushing past.”
