Says Nunzio of his work: “Sicilian Mine Boy explores the history of the Carusi (slave mine boy). Carusi worked in the Sicilian sulfur mines frmo the mid 1800’s in deplorable, slave-like conditions. Bodies were twister and deformed due to the heavy burdens they were compelled to carry.”
As the son of Sicilian immigrants, living a dual existence in middle class Australian suburbia became the norm. Nunzio takes a deep dive into his personal journey, reflecting on his rich cultural heritage and upbringing. His work explores the idea of identity, but in particular, the facade that we use in society to mask their inner sensitivities and insecurities.
