The Standing Figure series is a continuation of Dear Human’s exploration of clay-paper – a mixture of pulped recycled paper and porcelain – to create objects that represent the handmade ways of the recent past. These figures began to take on human characteristics as Dear Human built up solid geometric shapes that took on robot-like forms, with personalities all their own.

The collaboration of Montreal-based design partnership, Dear Human (aka Jasna Sokolovic and Noel O’Connell), balances between art and design and is rooted in the duo’s common interests in world craft traditions, sustainable making, and unconventional material (re)use. Works created for Curatorial+Co. were influenced by handmade ways of recent past, ethnic textiles, tribal masks and the couple’s own product designs. The Standing Figure series uses a technique developed by Dear Human sculpting with a clay-paper mixture over armatures.
