In this series, Madeleine Cruise continues to investigate the relationship between art and life and the meditative role of painting. Based on the interiors of her own home and garden, Madeleine has carefully composed paintings that reevaluate the status of common objects and domestic tasks while demonstrating the home as an important place for contemplation. Her interior paintings are multi-faceted compositions that represent the sequence of everyday life and as such seek to elevate and make rituals of ordinary domestic practices.
Madeleine says of her work Still Life After Wakelin: “This carefully composed painting reevaluates the status of common objects and domestic tasks while demonstrating the home as an important place for contemplation. When making this work the artist looked to Australian modernist painter, Roland Wakelin, whose pastel palette and use of colour gradation can be seen to have influenced this piece.”
