Katrina O’Brien’s striking works of ink, acrylic and graphite sway between painting and drawing. Indeed, Katrina sees her artwork as a kind of dance, and a way of delving into her own and others’ inner psyche.

Says Katrina: “As a non-musician, I’m intrigued by the processes that would occur in making music or writing songs. Sometimes I wonder what sound my practice and process would result in if it was music I was making.

This work started very differently to the others in the series. A lot of its early life was spent on the floor instead of on the wall. The process was still very hands on, but the elements underneath were very different. A photo is one thing, but when viewed in person this work seems to have a strange power – it draws you in the more time you spend with it. It sat in my studio for a while before I decided it was finished. Sometimes when this happens, I am tempted to add another layer or multiple marks, but this one had a very commanding presence that called for me to let it be.”

Initialed on front.
