Says Ileigh of her 2022 solo show Blue and Ether: “Ether and Blue explores the negative space, the rest, the gaps, the void, the shadows, and how these ’empty’ spaces are actually so full. I am drawn to the idea that when things, thoughts, or memories are discarded, left to the disorganisation of forgetting, there is an inherent beauty in the space they take on.
These paintings have space, areas of erasure and darkness. They hold weight and emotion, like we all learn to. Raindrops are tears but they are relief too. Night skies are mysterious and unknowable but always magical.
The lagoon represents sanctuary, contemplation and peace. Its ever-changing nature is a comforting parallel to mine and yours, so I like to add some human traits and gestures. Trees hold hands, hug and have hair.
Often, I want to make serious paintings, but the paintings themselves have other ideas of their own and won’t let it be, something that became evident after completing this body of work.
I think it’s a very sweet message from the paintings, that playfulness and contentment will always try to peek their little heads through whatever shadow they can, it’s just about choosing when to let them.”
