The Sundays, Hamilton Island

Curatorial+Co. was honoured to be appointed as the art consultant for The Sundays – Hamilton Island’s new luxury resort, commissioning and placing works by a sole artist, Tiarna Herczeg, whose Kuku Yalanji family originates from Far North Queensland. The artwork scope included original paintings for the restaurant and reception, large-scale limited edition prints on board within the hotel guest suites, and hand-painted murals across the tropical garden spaces. The brief was to present artworks that felt fresh, vibrant, zesty, and full of tropical energy, enhancing and uplifting the guest experience.

The hotel’s motto is: Slow starts, sleep ins, long lunches and arvo naps. Now that’s a brief we can embrace!

The 59-room property offers a fresh take on tropical island stays – just steps from the Coral Sea. “The Sundays brings something truly special to Hamilton Island – an elevated boutique escape that welcomes families and reflects the warm, laidback, uniquely Australian style of hospitality Hamilton Island is known for,” says Nick Dowling, CEO of Hamilton Island. Tiarna’s artwork is a reflection of this sensibility.

The Sundays has been designed in a gentle dialogue with its surroundings – from sculptural stonework and tropical gardens to a meandering boardwalk that leads to the hotel’s private beach. Designer Carrie Williams has created relaxed, contemporary spaces where natural textures and a soft coastal palette frame sweeping Whitsunday views. Each room includes a balcony or terrace, while custom artworks by Tiarna reflect the colours and stories of the Whitsundays.

At its heart is Catseye Pool Club, the hotel’s signature restaurant and bar by acclaimed Australian culinary duo Josh and Julie Niland. Here, Tiarna has created original works to sit within the dynamic space, celebrating the rainforest and the sea.
