This artwork is part of Kasper Raglus' collection, 'Together'.
Raglus’ body of work expands on his minimalist sensibility through an exploration of three-dimensional form. The geometric order of his paintings reflects their relationship to architecture and landscape – compositional meeting points between planes of colour echo the lines where wall, floor, and ceiling intersect, where the horizon meets the ocean, and where waves meet the shore. Raglus’ rich use of colour and hard-edge illusionism draw on familiar motifs, like guilty pleasures translated through a sense of playfulness; layered pastels allude to cake, while saturated palettes trigger gustatory sensations of sweet and sour.
His layered construction of the canvas was influenced in part by the experience of fatherhood. “Becoming a parent has really shifted the way I see the world,” he says. “Something I keep telling myself is that I must hold myself up for my son. I see the stacking of shapes as a reference to this – they are holding each other up in some way.”
Rather than a deviation from the visual language to which he has been committed for over a decade, these works extend its trajectory – allowing sculptural forms to guide the practice into new spatial and emotional territories as the artist himself continues to grow and evolve.
