Liliana Pasalic's series 'Reality is Closed for Maintenance', mixes the touch points between media so that boundaries between image, surface, and material begin to dissolve. Through processes of layering and overlap, images slip into and through one another, creating cracks in the visible world – portals that suggest another reality unfolding quietly behind the familiar one.

The title of the series reflects the abstract and speculative nature of Pasalic’s approach. Rather than depicting the external environment, she paints and constructs from within: from sensation, memory, and her own coded perception of reality. Her works resonate with the notion that reality itself may be a projection, a holographic experience that depends on the observer. Yet, even if this theory holds truth, Pasalic reminds us that art remains a place to step outside that projection – to pause, to breathe, and to have a different experience.

Pasalic’s practice explores where materials and processes can meet and merge. If “images are paint of today” then there is no reason not to use them as paint. Photographic prints engage with texture, sculpture, and painting, transforming images into sensations of physical presence. Textiles become paintings, paintings become sculptures. Through these hybrid gestures, she brings together symbols of our architectural landscapes and natural environments, allowing them to coexist in ways that defy logic but feel visually exciting and emotionally precise.

Embracing the absurd, the accidental, the hidden and the almost grotesque, Pasalic constructs strange visual worlds. She does not seek to impose meaning, but rather invites the viewer to receive the work intuitively – with their body and senses instead of the intellect. In these layered images and woven materials, one encounters a vision of reality that is at once fractured and whole, subjective and shared – a vibration of the present moment, flickering with the possibility of something beyond the usual, just beyond sight.
