In Susie Dureau's 'Songbird', a coastal landscape is punctuated by a flame-like motif derived from a spectrogram of the splendid fairy-wren’s call. This painting celebrates the reciprocal dynamics between habitat and inhabitant, proposing that ecological systems are made through continuous exchanges of sound, behaviour, and presence. In this worldview, landscape operates not as a static backdrop but shaped by, and shaping, the lives within it.
Dureau’s oil paintings, light installations and spectrogram collages are portals into other worlds: worlds where reality and imagination are interchangeable. She ‘feels’ as a way of thinking, using her primary experience of the natural world as a guide. While her artworks are landscape-based, they invite non-literal interpretations about light, colour, and energy in the landscape. They point to the wildness and primal nature in humankind. Her current investigation explores the forces that bind humanity into an intimate reciprocal relationship with the more-than-human world.
