Caroline Duffy

Artist's Statement

Caroline Duffy (b.1950) is a sculptor whose collage-informed steel works emerge from the transformation of discarded industrial materials. Beginning with paper and cardboard abstraction, her practice evolved into welded steel assemblages sourced from country scrap yards. Guided intuitively by the shape and patina of salvaged metal, Duffy allows material to initiate each composition rather than imposing narrative.

Working with mild steel, she embraces a rough formal language, preserving traces of previous use within resolved abstract forms. Central to her practice is the dialogue between fullness and emptiness: negative space operates as an active force, carving open channels through each sculpture. Her recent woodblock prints extend this investigation, distilling the open compositions of the steel works into graphic form. Across mediums, Duffy creates objects with strength and gravitas that assert their own place within the environment.
