RECLINE, 2022 • Varnished recycled steel • 44cm H x 82cm W x 22cm D, 7kg

Caroline Duffy describes her sculptural pieces as ‘collages’ using found and recycled materials to make abstract artworks. She begins her process by constructing collages she makes from old cardboard. Her philosophy is to try to make something out of the many types of discarded materials that we come across almost every day. Nearly all of her sculptures started life as a utilitarian object which was discarded and now has been made into something else. She even likes to replicate the ‘torn’ edges on the steel that can be seen in the cardboard collages.

Today we also celebrate the opening of CAROLINE DU Today we also celebrate the opening of CAROLINE DUFFY’s solo show RECONSTRUCTED - previewing today + opening night drinks 5-8pm Thurs 9 March at our Redfern gallery.

Caroline’s show is the culmination of 4 years of gathering reclaimed and recycled steel and creating extraordinary sculptures that are as much about the negative space as they are able the structures themselves.

Found steel—the rusty, broken, bent pieces—prompts the start of the abstract forms for RECONSTRUCTED, and each sculpture takes on a life of its own. The heavy and dense nature of the material gives a sense of gravitas and new-found permanence to the sculptures. Each piece is an individual and has not grown from any narrative or person or place. The material alone starts the process and ignites the imagination. The forms are a purely abstract response to the shape, texture and weight of the raw material Caroline has salvaged.

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY is always a very proud d INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY is always a very proud day for Curatorial+Co. Today we’d like to acknowledge the 35 incredible female artists who we are honoured to know and represent. We are proud that today 81% of our stable is made up of artists who are women.

Each has forged her own path to come to this place in her art practice. Many have taken the brave step to switch careers and follow that inner creative voice that brought them to this place. They work multiple jobs, they juggle families, they are brave and strong, they are constantly inspiring and passionate, they make our (all-female) team want to work hard to show the world their work.

And while we do not specifically seek out female artists to work with (as it will always be about the work that is created) it just so happens that a lot of the incredible pieces we show have a woman as the creator. These women have fought hard to bring their work to the forefront despite being just a fraction of the represented artists in institutions worldwide. That must change. We are honoured to know them, to guide them, to challenge them and to bring their artwork to new audiences. On this IWD 2023 we celebrate YOU - incredible creative women! Sophie x

LAST DAY to catch Tiarna Herczeg’s solo Wungarij LAST DAY to catch Tiarna Herczeg’s solo Wungariji (Hot Season)! We’re open 10am to 4pm.

This exhibition is a spiritual tour of places important to Tiarna. This body of work has been titled Wungariji because Tiarna believes all of their fondest memories, identity and vitality are tied to the sun, and that the sun urges us to explore and play.

Wungariji highlights Tiarna’s dive into experimenting with two different styles of painting—taking portions of their more detailed works, and creating large abstract shapes, bringing vibrant colour, intrinsic mark-making and a play with macro/micro concepts to the canvas.
