This work shifts Korynn Morrison's 'Excavated Landscapes' series into a bird’s eye view, informed by rocks gathered while walking the shoreline of her local beach. Carried as objects for contemplation, these pebbles invite sustained attention, revealing layers of form, texture, and presence that continue to unfold the longer they are held and observed.

Through layering, burial, and excavation, the process becomes a considered negotiation between control and surrender, as the history embedded in the surface is gradually uncovered, imperfect, unpredictable, and alive.

Each mark, scrape, and fragment becomes an embedded relic of the natural world. A surface that acts as a map of accumulated memory, revealing traces of time, tension, and transformation.

Says Morrison: “Colour speaks in many volumes and creates a variety of conversations across the surface of a painting. Colour blocking my compositions from the bones up and strategically planning how each colour communicates on top of one another has formed a methodology to bring depth and dimension to my compositions.”

Litre upon litre of paint, each colour building on the last, she forms a history upon the surface of each panel, before finally burying her entire composition beneath a thick final coat. This performative burial phase has become a ritual of Morrison’s practice. Process is the heartbeat that gives life to Morrison’s work.
