Saffron Newey

Weaving a path through five centuries of western painting, Saffron Newey’s work visits upon examples of sublime landscape. Impassioned vistas, mountains, sea, and sky reference the Dutch Baroque, French Rococo, American and Norwegian Romanticism – even banal stock photography. Digital interventions upon colour, format, resolution, and detail are performed by Newey to create re-imaginings of these historical artworks. Summoned from online archives, the resulting paintings tell a new story of the digital sublime – the Internet – from which they were sourced. Newey transforms the indifference of the virtual environment by employing hyper-romance and melodrama. The paintings are ‘power ballads’ dedicated to lost connections.
