Kate Banazi

Kate Banazi’s practice is anchored in the human body — drawn from life, then pulled apart into fragments of line, limb, and edge that shift, repeat, and resist fixed meaning. The body moves through sketch, computer, photograph, screen, and print, each layer adding distortion.

Says Banazi of this work: "The paintings begin in noise. Silkscreened fragments are laid down quickly and insistently, building visual layered creating a static that is impossible to quieten.

"Bodies are painted over and into this ground noise scrubbed, dragged and loosely formed, arriving whole but wrong and contradictory. Stretched, compressed, free but awkward. They are neither coy nor seductive, simply free to inhabit their own strange proportions.

"I’m interested in that uncertainty — the moment a body appears, disappears, then catches you looking.

"Look again. It’s all there."
