"Perhaps the darkest piece in the series, this work transforms the lily into the villain," explains Simon Cardwell. "The flower uses its beauty and vivid colour to lure its prey, hiding among the dark red lilies, lying in wait with its horned stem. While photographing the orange canaries, I positioned an object for one to perch on, encouraging it to stand tall as if on alert, while the other canary takes flight, having sensed the imposter."

Cardwell's 'Temple of Flora' series is an exploration into symbols, and metaphors crafting surreal imagery that revitalise modern myths. "Drawing from the beauty of botanicals and birds, my art serves as a vessel for both ancient allegories and contemporary narratives," says Cardwell who photographs each element in the montage from real life, including sea- and skyscapes of Bondi Beach and birdlife in his local area.

"Symbols, with their weight of human experiences, have long fascinated me. Deciphering their language, bridging the past with our collective consciousness. Metaphor enriches my work, blending the known and unknown, inviting viewers to explore figurative and abstract realms of understanding.
