"Memories don’t simply reside inside the brain, they are also left as traces on the body. Implicit memories — unconscious recollections — permeate our physical being and are an essential basis of our experience of self and identity. These traces can sometimes be more durable than autobiographical memories: bodily sensations such as smell and taste, or situations, can suddenly revive the past. A recollection more often felt than known — a tacit but enduring bodily memory. Such traces form the underlaying carrier of our life history", says Lynn Savery of this work.

Savery’s paintings possess a strong sense of style and carry layers of mystery and introspection. Her subject matter seamlessly melds into stories in which every detail is attended to. Constantly inventing distinct mise-en-scenes in her head and drawing on historical references, Savery aims to translate the past into contemporary renditions of romanticism.
