"It is a difficult business — this time-keeping; nothing more quickly disorders it than contact with any of the arts." Virginia Woolf, Orlando 1928.
Beating to the pulse of modernity, time is perceived as unidirectional, continuous and chronological. Such a timeline inevitably establishes a dichotomous relationship between old and new, a belief that the past and present are distinct and unrelated. Challenging this binary distinction, Henri Bergson contends that time exists as duree (duration), a continuous flow in which the relationship between past and present is one of coexistence rather than succession. In this painting, the past coexists with the present.
Lynn Savery’s paintings possess a strong sense of style and carry layers of mystery and introspection. Her subject matter seamlessly melds into stories in which every detail is attended to. Constantly inventing distinct mise-en-scenes in her head and drawing on historical references, Savery aims to translate the past into contemporary renditions of romanticism.
