This limited edition series of Humble Matter ceramic vessels exclusive to Curatorial+Co. uses variations on a pod-like form to explore concepts of growth, stasis and stability. TTM Vessel is named as an abbreviation of ‘totem’, celebrating its totemic shape.
John Born, creator of Humble Matter, says: “My work uses a vocabulary of repeated shapes in an attempt to create archetypal forms that feel like an inevitable part of this continuum. They not only serve a purpose as functional pieces, but as talismans that ground us in the magic and importance of everyday objects and rituals in an increasingly inhuman and digitized world.”
Each stoneware piece is dried, given three coats of terra sigillata (finely ground ball clay in suspension) and then bisque fired. After the bisque firing, red iron wash is applied and wiped off, and the piece is then fired to 1200˚C. This process produces the unique crackled surface texture.
