Says Katarina of her Amphora sculptures: “I half-jokingly describe my amphora vessels as ‘classical meets wabi-sabi’. I take shapes from ancient Roman and Grecian vessels and apply a finish that celebrates the maker’s mark, like dimples left by pinching at clay or scrapes from hand-shaping. I deliberating don’t aim for perfection, instead an overall feeling of harmony within the piece.”

Most of Katarina’s ceramic pieces ‘grow’ slowly over a period of up to a week, a process that allows her to step back and observe where a piece intends to go. Raw oxides and porcelain slip are used on many of her works, which allows for the tactile surface to remain.
