William Versace’s Rockpool/Urchin is a multifaceted wall sculpture comprised of resin, plaster, rabbit skin glue, polished copper, acrylic, natural pigments from Kamay and urchin spines on aluminium board. The work is integrated intimately with organic materials of microbiology, botany and minerals, mapping a collaboration with Kamay, speaking with one another to reveal a conversation around place.
Choosing to work with these selected materials, William Versace highlights the complex interactions of the many elements that make a place and the deliberately broad scope of processes and materiality within the artist’s practice.
We acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the lands – Kamay, more specifically, Bunnabi, the north headland of Botany Bay, on Gadigal land. We pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging and we celebrate the diversity of Aboriginal peoples and their ongoing cultures and connections to the lands and waters of NSW.
