Says Lilli of this work: “Says Lilli Waters of this work: “This photograph was taken in the Tidal River on Yiruk Wamoon, the land of the Boonwurrung, Bunurong and Gunaikurnai people. The river runs into the bay, swells with the tide, and has a fascinating range of colours, purple-yellow and emerald. On this day the rising tide created a singularly enchanting sandy whirlpool I’d never seen here before. The water glistened in the morning sun, sparkling on the women’s skins, creating warmth and aliveness as the women slipped in and out of the water.

“It was a surreal scene to witness these fearless brave women floating down the river, clinging to each other under the fabric to stay together. By flipping the image upside down, they become angels or deities, floating as if the cloud-like background was a playground for the figures to perform on. The sun was beautifully peering through the clouds that morning, creating a soft shard of light that brings life to their world. The emotional gestures and relationships between the subjects bring questions to mind, ambiguities. The space between power, harmony, and unrest. Are they rising or falling? Struggling, battling forces or unified and symbiotic?”
