Natalie Rosin says of this work: “Memory, like clay, is malleable, shaped by time and experiences. As clay can warp and shrink during the sculpting process, so too can memories be influenced by the passage of time. This sculpture is inspired by my memory of the art deco ‘Bondi blue’ building in Sydney’s Bondi Beach. Of course I recall its blue visage, having passed this landmark many times over growing up in Sydney, its facade in conversation with the sky and the sea. I have admired its window patterns, art deco curvature and form. I recall there is an awning, providing shade along where Military Road meets Campbell Parade. As I sculpted this piece, while certain elements were abstracted in the translation of the clay form, the essence of the building’s character and dialogue with the surrounding environment remain. Uncovered in this process is beauty in the imperfections, in the unique representation and conversation between the artist and the past, both shaped by the hands of time and experience.”
