Says Kate, “This body of work is a self-portrait based on drawings of my own body. After so many years of basing my ideas on the drawings of others, it felt apt to focus on my own form as I entered the next phase of my life. My body is changing and the relationship I have with it is being pushed into unlearning.
“Silkscreen printing is a medium that allows me to push through a rigorous process-driven practice of repetition with every duplication producing an often imperceptibly different outcome. The shapes are the same but unique – the weather, the medium, the substrate my physicality will change each result. Every day, I feel as if I am rearranging.
“My back and breasts put through processes that far remove them from what I initially saw in the mirror. These are the beginnings of a place where I hope to see my body anew kindly, probably for the first time, with joyful celebration of all it has done, and all it will come to do. My back, looking over my shoulder and acknowledging the traits I’ve inherited from my family, the market traders, perfume makers, pattern cutters, and typographers. The rogues, the doves.”
