Curatorial+Co.’s highly anticipated end of year small works show, DARING (previously Darlings), invites artists to colour outside the lines of their practice through exploration, risk and play. Be bold, be brave, be DARING.
Sumpa Kita, I Promise You is a collaborative work between the artist and her son. Named after the Tagalog term, the work weaves together the multiple roles of a woman, mother, lover, and artist – a delicate balancing act that the artist often struggles with as a daughter of migrants. To fulfill these roles is to acknowledge the generations of powerful, dedicated and brave women in her bloodline and the history of their trauma and resilience. In this work, Chloe Caday uses the symbol of the Sampaguita flower, named after the phrase, ‘Sumpa Kita (I promise you)’, and it is a recurring motif in her work that signifies hope, love and devotion in Filipino culture. On handmade abaca paper painted by her son, the work was then cut and woven using a traditional method of banig weaving. Celebrating her heritage, Chloe mindfully carries on her culture to her children, learning and unlearning from the history to open up a new perspective for them, and future generations.
Says Chloe on why this work is DARING: “Creating this work was DARING for me as I reimagined my traditional painting practice and recurring concepts of heritage, environment and motherhood into a new perspective and medium – using the method of collage and weaving to reinterpret these themes. “
