Curatorial+Co.’s highly anticipated end of year small works show, DARING (previously Darlings), invites artists to colour outside the lines of their practice through exploration, risk and play. Be bold, be brave, be DARING.
Says Kerryn on why her work is DARING: “This piece is the first in a new series of ceramic sculptures that celebrates the often hidden parts of the making process, including clay props used to support precarious forms while they dry and harden. Usually once the sculpture is strong enough to support itself I will discard the clay props but in this series I have chosen to keep them in place and highlight them using gold lustre, capturing all the wonderful texture and fingerprints left from the quick process of roughly rolling and squeezing the clay into shape. Finishing them in gold further highlights the juxtaposition of these quickly formed utilitarian objects next to the consistent pattern on the main body that was created by slow, methodical coil building, and brings into question which parts of the making process we assign value to.”
