NEW WORK by Brett Anthony Moore has landed in the gallery! Continuing in his distinctive approach to abstraction, Brett pushes the boundaries of his practice with a new series of resin-coated wall reliefs.⁠

Brett primarily works with acrylics, generating “paint skins” in his studio through a process of exploration and blending a carefully chosen colour palette. These paint skins are then left to dry and undergo natural contraction over approximately a week. Following this, Brett engages with the resulting piece, considering its shape and form, creating his final sculptural work.⁠

Cardwell uses the attractiveness of these natural elements to allure the viewer into the image and then expose dark moments hidden within the work. The fundamental power of Simon’s work is that they are both familiar and unseen – another impossibility that he brings to life in his photographs.⁠

Says Cardwell of this work, “The inspiration for this image is the amazing colour of the Magnolia flower against the storm clouds. The bird seems to be aware of the snake looking for its prey. The birds are posed to achieve the concept and establish a sense of foreboding within the image.”⁠

Emily Devers’ hand-painted mural, spanning 105m2 across the Event Centre at Queen’s Wharf, performs as a backdrop to the high-end events space, enhancing clientele’s experience through an immersion within its painterly textures and large areas of solid colour.⁠
⁠
Blending contemporary painting and collage with markers of contemporary muralism, Emily creates a unique visual language. Moments of erasure and reapplication with the work reference the artist’s studio practice and unique aesthetic, providing additional depth to the mural.⁠
⁠
Using the backgrounds of found images, or the “non-image” to divide and organise space in her painted compositions she is interested in the relationship between object and space within an image and continues to investigate this visual tension through her artwork and murals.⁠

Says Kate of her 'Shapeshifter' series, “The shapes are pulled from the outlines of these drawings, entwined and meshing, evoking tumbling hormones and dizzying vertigo, the dance between my body and my bed. The drawings go through multiple processes to get to graphic linear motifs and then again to be transferred to silkscreens. Each step is a move away from the source material thrust into isolation and brought back to an integrated form, in this state they are tiny viewfinders of layered quilts and threads, connections and overlaps.”⁠

New acquisition alert!

Michael Carney is an interdisciplinary artist working across painting, ceramics and virtual reality media. He blends contemporary and antiquated aesthetics to present works that play with the notions of time in flux. His figurative works are often combined or collaged landscapes, contrasted by gestural or abstracted elements. Exploring ontological themes and philosophies, activated by the viewer’s own contemplation. The artist states “Night Watch channels the unsettling atmospheric sets of modernist thriller cinema through painting. This painting evokes sensations of voyeuristic unease; by contrasting the disharmonious jungle with the warm glow of an illuminated home. Night Watch balances feelings of comfort and security through ominous images of implied occupancy”. Carney completed a Masters by Research (Visual Arts) at the University of South Australia in 2016.
