Leonie Barton is an artist based rurally on the mid-North Coast of NSW, Australia. Her environment feeds her practice as it reflects the changing seasons and how the complexity of nature is in constant flux. Both the power and stillness of the outdoors informs her practice, whether it’s her drawings, paintings, ephemeral installations, or large format photography from solo travels through remote areas of the world. Barton works intuitively, discovering shapes, balance and harmony in compositions. Spending time in nature is essential to the artist’s practice, for its grounding and for its allowance to encounter the intimate details of life — slowly.
Barton has exhibited in Sydney, Melbourne, London and Singapore. Commissioned by Oatleys Wines to create a range of exclusive labels for the Artist Series with Craigmoor Wines created on site in the vineyards at Mudgee NSW, invited by Noosa Regional Gallery to instruct a week long masterclass, mentoring artists in their biannual festival Floating Land. Recently, Barton produced a body of work as part of R.M.Williams’ Artist in Residence program at their Sydney flagship location. Barton was a painting finalist in the Little Things Art Prize 2021, the Inside This Box Art Prize, 2025 and The Anderson Art Award, 2025.
