OPENING DRINKS 6-8pm Wednesday 17 July.
We are thrilled to present a new body of work by Freemantle-based ceramic artist, Emma Lindegaard, in our Woolloomooloo gallery from 17 July – 3 August 2024.
For the past year Emma Lindegaard started each day at Wayalup Beach, a stretch of ocean south of Perth along Australia’s western coastline. Emma would traverse the shores, sitting with uncomfortable thoughts surrounding recent changes in her life.
This meditative ritual allowed her to seek comfort through her sensorial interactions with the natural elements. The sounds of the ocean and the feeling of sand underfoot allowed Emma to stay present in her body which helped navigate and explore the psyche.
Emma drew on these memories as a reference point for her latest body of work, The Tides Do That With Me. In this series, the artist has turned her lived experience into forms that reference her time at the ocean through the textures, shapes and movement. Her works encourage the viewer to sit with each piece, to imbue some of the bodily responses she recalls from her time on the beach. Intuitive mark-making and carving intend to emulate sounds and surfaces with an ethereal quality. Her sculptures are formed around a central void which allows the light to pierce through the clay, emulating the heart space within the ceramic body. Her works seek to encourage the audience to reimagine how we might engage with our physical environment and its effect on our psychological wellbeing.
