ART CONSULTANCY. Curated by Curatorial+Co., the recently completed five-star hotel, Lanson Place Parliament Gardens, Melbourne, features a monumental ceiling installation, championing First Nations storytelling and mark-making.⁠
⁠
Boonwurrung, Wemba Wemba and Trawlwoolway woman and artist Jarra Karalinar Steel and sculptor Corey Thomas worked in collaboration to develop the centrepiece of the Lanson Place collection – a 40-meter ceiling installation suspended in the lobby of the Melbourne hotel. The large-scale artwork is informed by Jarra’s cultural connection to South Kulin Nation mark-making and Corey’s highly developed ability to create sculptural forms that highlight the inherent qualities of specific materials and their physical surroundings.⁠
⁠
The sculptural installation references the shedding layers of the paperbark/Melaleuca tree and its significance within Boonwurrung and Kulin culture. Unfurling and gliding across the space like a manuscript, the installation mimics the gesture of wind and ephemeral nature of thought and tradition. ⁠
⁠
Delicately embossed with traditional mark-making grounded in Southeast Kulin design, the sculptural installation is created from organic, flowing forms repeated utilising sheets of clear acrylic that have been slumped in a thermal process. Paying homage to the meticulously restored 1901 Salvation Army Printing Works in which Lanson Place is situated, the acrylic sheets mimic the physicality of paper moving through the wind.⁠

Traditional patterns and symbols imbued within the surface reveal themselves when illuminated, unfolding as a chimera – an ephemeral mirage that reflects light and has an interstitial play between the void space of the mirrored ceiling and the sculpture.⁠

MEET OUR TEAM. Our Gallery Assistant, Arina Filippovich, is an emerging arts professional with experience across art fairs and art editorial fields. She views art as a form of living, seeking meaningful constellations between inner and outer worlds. In her practice, she encapsulates philosophy and spirituality to connect and transcend the receptiveness of an artwork. She cares deeply for the cultural landscape and seeks to unite artists and audiences to originate new dialogues and impact the fabrics of life. She is currently pursuing a Masters of Art Curating at the University of Sydney.⁠
