This work is part of Mitchell Cheesman’s 2024 solo exhibition, From My Chair.

Where does one spend the majority of their days? Where is that one place where contemplation is the precipice of movement. Set in stained leather, with a slouch for the wicked, hat covers curls, coat-back-flung as the LED flickered. These are the things seen, the things felt, from my chair.

In each diversity & every unset, the shadows of shade, show little regret
Ceramic in still porcelain towers slowly moving in poor-postured, cross-legged hours
My brush cures the day as the flowers disarray
I have sought black birds on unseen branches & six bottles make dances
Baskets play twister with turpentine blisters
Sheets of fleets and strong southern winds
Repetition leans into blinded sins
Extending handles to try & get a better grip
We make work with what one can only dream & sip
I am susceptible to the spells this chair inimitably creaks throughout the morning & into nightfall
An angled patch where I have spent most of my recent days on this planet
A chair to think in
A chair to sink in
A chair to lock eyes with kangaroo’s in
A chair to watch the season’s change
A chair to walk away in
A chair to smoke in
A chair for multicoloured hands
A chair to put scruff in
A chair I love
A chair I hate
A chair I have become
A chair for fate.

This is ‘From My Chair’.
