Morgan Stokes Depicting Being, from the series Skin, is exploring and reinterpreting the medium of painting. Morgan says of this work, “For some of my earlier works, I have substituted canvas for silk in order to draw attention to the physical makeup of painting – that is, supporting stretcher bars. This work is a continuation of this idea, conceived as a study into the silk as a fabric and the effect stitching has on composition. To emphasise the stretcher bars and the experience of existing with the piece, I’ve added dichroic film adds a glow which changes depending on the light and the angle of the viewer. I’ve also stitched in a portrait, so the painting watches back.”
