Curatorial+Co.’s highly anticipated end of year small works show, DARING (previously Darlings), invites artists to colour outside the lines of their practice through exploration, risk and play. Be bold, be brave, be DARING.
Says Mim on why her work is DARING: “Colour. It is always colour. It is late spring, I am in Sydney, and the jacarandas are in full bloom. And by full bloom I mean you cannot not let them permeate your existence. Perhaps my next painting will be a hot vermillion one, with the scarlet flare of the flame trees which are often planted in close proximity to the jacarandas and where huge colour conversations ensue. Or perhaps a neon acidic lime painting, for the brilliant hue of the Robinia tree also seen around Sydney right now.
“Colour is my compass, it is where I start and how I move through a painting. Living so closely amongst nature with dirt under my fingernails, butcher birds flying in the kitchen window and clay from the dam making its way into my studio, the tactile nature of this painting, the materiality of it, represents my physical environment, one that I am embedded in. You can touch the painting, go on, do it. I double dare you.”
