Amber Hearn’s latest body of work is a series of self-portraits woven into landscapes that capture the anticipation of the arrival of her daughter, speaking to both the emotional and physical shifts within the body. The works highlight the complexities of labour and childbirth, whilst encapsulating the symbiotic relationship between the pain and beauty of that experience.

Says Amber of this work, Whilst in labour with my daughter, I suddenly felt urged to turn deeply inwards. In that intimate moment, I felt compelled to physically isolate myself by sitting on the floor of my wardrobe. Surrounded by clothing, I laboured for hours cocooned by soft textiles. In this painting, the curtaining layers evoke a sense of nesting and safety within confinement. They unfold the process of being held and nurtured within this small space. There’s a sensation of pushing through and revealing what lies beyond, symbolising both vulnerability and transformation. The gentle colour palette captures sensitivity, reflecting the inward journey of preparing for the birth of my daughter.”
